In 1940, an entrepreneur named Bill Rosenberg founded and opened a donut shop with the name Open Kettle, in the city of Boston, Quincy - Massachusetts, United States. Out of expectations, his donut shop is growing rapidly. This was seen from the growing number of customers who visited.

Looking at the positive development of his business, in 1950 Rosenberg decided to change the name Open Kettle to a more selling name. After a long process, a more new promising name has been chosen which is Dunkin' Donuts. As the name change, franchise system is made.

Years passed. Dunkin' Donuts growth and fame are unstoppable. Even in 1970, Dunkin' Donuts has become an international brand with an extraordinary reputation in product quality and service. This reputation and fame are attracting interest from Allied Domecq - an international company in charge of Togo's and Baskin Robins - to buy Dunkin' Donuts from the Rosenberg family. The purchase and acquisition of companies from Rosenberg's family are finally agreed with friendly manner in 1983.

Despite the ownership change, Allied Domecq still maintaining the management system that has been running at Dunkin' Donuts. Even if there is anything need to be changed, the changes were made in small scale. Allied Domecq management have only one ambition, that is to help Dunkin' Donuts expanding in international markets. To fulfill that ambition, standardization is implemented throughout all Dunkin' Donuts store. In addition, various marketing strategies are launched, like always trying to refresh the design in accordance with the trend, focusing on product quality and always try to maximize customer satisfaction.

With the support of reliable human resources ,in short time Allied Domecq has achieved its ambition. Dunkin' Donuts successfully expand its market in a remarkable way, that its store are not only spread in the Americas, but also in continental Europe and Asia.

Bahkan di tahun 1970, Dunkin' Donuts telah menjadi merek internasional dengan reputasi yang luar biasa dalam hal kualitas produk dan pelayanan. Reputasi dan ketenaran itu jugalah yang kemudian menarik minat Allied Domecq – sebuah perusahaan internasional yang membawahi Togo's dan Baskin Robins - untuk membeli Dunkin' Donuts dari keluarga Rosenberg. Pembelian dan pengambilalihan perusahaan dari keluarga Rosenberg akhirnya disepakati dan dilakukan dengan penuh persahabatan pada tahun 1983.

Meski berganti kepemilikan, Allied Domecq tetap berusaha mempertahankan sistem manajemen yang sudah berjalan di Dunkin' Donuts. Kalaupun ada yang harus dirubah, perubahan dilakukan dalam skala kecil. Hanya satu yang menjadi ambisi seluruh manajemen Allied Domecq yaitu membantu Dunkin' Donuts memperluas pasar secara internasional. Untuk mewujudkan ambisinya tersebut, diberlakukanlah standarisasi di seluruh counter Dunkin' Donuts. Di samping itu, berbagai strategi marketing yang jitu juga mulai dilancarkan, seperti selalu berusaha memperbaharui design sesuai dengan trend, fokus terhadap kualitas produk serta berusaha memaksimalkan kepuasan pelanggan.

Dengan didukung sumber daya manusia yang handal, dalam waktu singkat ambisi Allied Domecq tercapai. Dunkin' Donuts berhasil memperluas pasar secara menakjubkan sehingga gerainya tidak hanya tersebar di benua Amerika, tetapi juga di benua Eropa dan Asia.
